I had this happen to me when replacing leaky valve cover gasket. Broke the sensor as it was really brittle. The replacement sensor (original BMW part) was dead on arrival but I learned about this only after I installed everything. I was able to connect original cracked sensor to connector, wiggled it to get it int the right position for computer to see it, used small magnet to simulate magnet on camshaft and clear the codes. That proved to me that second (replacement sensor) was bad. I was able to exchange the sensor under warranty, although had to take valve cover second time. Once new sensor arrived, I connected it before taking valve cover off to check if sensor is fine.
