Hi Kevin,
If this still is a worry to you, you could try a borescope camera from Harbor Freight that might fit into the oil drain plug hole (check dimensions of each before purchase) and then use the camera on your next oil drain to see if you can locate the o-ring.
Once located, it then becomes a fishing expedition with a claw or end of a hangar to get it to the drain hole.
