But I'm of the other mindset. I like buying vehicles that are dirty and fugly. It means the owner just wants out and you can get a steal. Bought many $300-$600 E36's this way and made plenty off them or restoring them and selling for $3000-$4000.
Now my method only applies if you have time, space, money, and knowledge to work on the car. I'd offer him $4000 cash in person and see if he takes it. Too bad it's not running in that dash shot so you could see if you are dealing with a Christmas tree's worth of problems or not.

Yes I would agree with in terms of eventually turning them over and making a profit. Well Done. i was taking the search of the vehicle from the perspective that he wanted a good condition X5 for himself. I do remember that when you found your X5 4.8is Imola it wasn't exactly filthy and neglected. And from where you have taken it from where it has come from. Well thats just impressive.
