Thanks for the replies so far, great info here! There's also a couple other things I forgot to ask about in my OP.
Aftermarket Audio:
I have a single-DIN Pioneer DEH-X4800BT laying around from my last car. It's less than a year old and is quite a nice unit. My questions...
1. Can I ditch the Business CD player and replace it with this unit while keeping the MID where it is?
2. Do I need to rewire anything manually, or do adapters exist to separate audio control from the MID?
2. Do adapters for relocating the MID exist if I decide it's easier to go with a regular bezel/pocket kit?
3. What do we do about steering wheel controls?
My X5 Doesn't Go To Sleep
As it says on the tin, mine does not seem to go to sleep after 16 minutes like most do! I've confirmed with the 12v outlet next to the ashtray; mine never turns off. I've also noticed that the Park light is still on hours after I've locked the vehicle. I've read on various forums that this is normal for some models?

My research on line leads me to believe there is something about the OEM glass that is different than after market. The same sensor is used for the automatic head light function. Is that working?

Fifty150hs also suggests testing to see if the auto headlights are working and this would rule out a K bus or wiring issue.

Here's the high-res version of that photo. I didn't notice that before, but it looks like glue or something...

According to the service history I received with the car and the previous owner's knowledge (both of which go back to about 2004) the windshield has never been replaced. I guess the
first owner could have had it done and it wasn't in the history?
Either way, I'm going to check out the windshield tomorrow. If it's not BMW glass I'm just gonna live with it. I've heard that OEM windshields for these can run over $600 :/
As for automatic headlights, isn't that just a DRL/idiot mode on U.S. 2003 and below? When I set the lights to Auto they run all the time (day and night) until I turn off the vehicle. Since I have the Xenons (and they're pricey) I never use the Auto setting.

Sounds like the windshield sensor has failed (or been disconnected) and the system is in a "failsafe" mode or something. Fifty150hs may be right about the windshield replacement thing, although there are non-OEM glass replacements that are known to work - but the installation process is critical.

Right, I'll check on it tomorrow. I can honestly live without the feature so it's not a huge deal.

Eh, I dunno. I put a URO window washer pump in my Miata two years ago and it's still running strong. Even it if fails in three months it's a ten-minute swap so I'm not too worried
