So i purchased a 2005 BMW X5 4.4 in September 2016, it came with 1 year warranty, my service is due next month and was booking it in, however my stop engine, check oil pressure warning came on, i took it to the mechanic and they said it was the oil pressure switch, they tried charging me $460 to replace it, i had it replaced with a genuine BMW switch and the light still came on, i then contacted them to say it wasn't the switch, as the light still came on, and now it started to have a ticking sound, immediately i switched the car off and had it towed to them, i asked them if they could check the oil pump or the bearings, they have done numerous things to my car e.g. changed oil filter, checked housing, dropped the pan and cleaned the pan, and still have not checked the oil pump or bearings which i have asked them to do, so far now they want me to pay $900 and have still not checked the pump or bearings and are saying i need a new engine oh and to top it off the warranty company are now trying to say because i have completed my service before 5,000kms my warranty is now void, sorry lady but its 10,000kms and it is still covered
Again i am so sorry but they literally had me in tears, and i am hoping someone can tell me if this mechanic is right, i am lost
The current oil pressure psi is at 12
To check the bearings they would have to be removed. Very labor intensive. They should be able to put a pressure gauge on the vehicle and see if the pressure is normal. If the oil pump is bad then it should be replaced. Let me guess you have one of those aftermarket warranties for your vehicle that is not from BMW? correct? In most of those cases the independent shop just has to show them proof of the problem and submit the details for the claim. Depending on the details of your warranty you may have to pay the first dollars of discovery and could be applied to the warranty deductible. If the engine is toast then the warranty company would just have to replace it providing that this is considered a covered event on the warranty.

Forgot to add if the sound is ticking noise then maybe its just as simple as the oil pump needs replacing. If the engine is knocking then you have a more serious problem like perhaps the a bearing has failed.
