I've used many different phone holders and pretty much hated them all. When I got my X, I ordered 4 different new phone holders to try out in an attempt to finally find one I liked. The one below I LOVE. It has over 27,000 reviews on Amazon with a 4.5 star rating. So you could say its pretty tried and true... I have one in my X5, 1 in each of my two work vans, and one in my rail buggy. No issues with any of them. It is a rigid design so no bouncing around like many other "flexible" holders. It has never fallen off my windshield like some others I've had. and the "no touch" phone mounting and 1-hand dis-mounting is awesome. Just my ¢02. But I would highly recommend it to anyone.
The Bimmian kit you are looking at seems very nice and I am sure you would be happy with it. I've just never used it before. I like my phone more in front of me and within my current field of view though. Like you, I drive a lot for work and am constantly looking at my phone for directions. Having my phone further out of the way where I have to take my eyes further away from the road I wouldn't like...
