Okay... HOLD UP!!! It appears realoem is mistaken... The 2004 and up 4.4L has the three bolt unit... My 4.6is has the 4 bolt unit... So, I am going to go with, the thermostat does fit the X5 4.4L up to 2003... I'm researching more...
I'll still take it!!! But this only fits up to 2003 4.4L and 4.6is as far as I know right now... After 2004, you get the three bolt version...
