Not sure about the degreaser - if it gets into the bearing it will dilute the lubrication, leading to early bering failure.

Anything that can clear crap from the rear face of the bearing will likely do - the credit card idea is a good plan.

And I hear ya re. the axle (drive shaft) fit into the hub - it can be a bit of a bear!

I hope you get it sorted...
