I know another possibility is the tail light seals leaking.. i posted on a separate thread about that. Looking at the tail lights though I don't really get how water from the tail light could get in the boot
Not really sure how to figure out where the water is coming from other than doing a garden hose test I guess.

Yes, they can. If the drains are clogged water backs up in the cassette and then spills over onto the headliner and runs down the C or D pillars. Yes, your tail light assembly can leak into the boot also.
