I have a 2007 X3 3.0si. The BMW service manual says:

Changing oil in transfer box (ATC 400/500)
Important!
When changing the gear oil, it is necessary to delete the self-
adapting wear values in the transfer box control unit.
Refer to Service functions.
Use only the approved transmission fluid.
Failure to comply with this requirement will result in serious
damage to the transfer box!
Nothing to do for the diffs, but the transfer case, yes. I would use the word "may" and not "will" for resulting serious damage. Understanding how the transfer case will have different clutch engagement for the front/rear torque split depending on the transfer case fluid properties, it only makes sense to delete the adaptations that are stored for the old fluid.
