My E53 has 130k miles and I don't know if its every been replaced. Is that a lot for one alternator to handle?

Is it safe to start the car without Auxiliary Water Pump connected? In order to check the new alternator is charing.

Reason I ask is, the alternator will arrive in a couple days, but the replacement pump be a few weeks
