Lion Heart is on a distinguished road
Very interesting post guys!!!

I have a rattle issue and hoping for some expertise to help me diagnose...

I have a 4.8is 120k miles. There is a definite rattle that sounds like it's coming from the top of the engine. You can also hear the noise clearly from the wheel arches.

I don't think (???) it's the cam chains. I have some experience with cam chains with Audi's and with those if the cam chain followers are worn you get a rattle in initial cold start up for 2-5 seconds as the oil pressure builds up and the cam chain tension increases. After which the rattle should become far less noticeable, or disappear. If not they're about to go!

On the X5 there does not seem to be any initial rattle upon start up, but the noise becomes aparrent as the revs drop to their normal idle level (revs are higher initiall when you first start then engine and then drop to the normal idle after 1-2 minutes).

Once idling at the normal level the rattle is permanent. I guess revving would make it disappear - I'll check that later though!!

I've taken two video's to show the issue (24 and 43 seconds so kept it short and sharp!) Can you guys take a look and let me know what you think:

VIDEO 1 (inside engine bay):

VIDEO 2 (outside car and wheel arches):

What do you think is the likely culprit here?
