The first thing I always check on any BMW with an electrical issue is the fuse (if the adaptive headlight has an individual fuse), next check the connection. If that doesn't work its probably broken. I once bought an entire headlight assembly ($700) for my E53 and when I pulled the "broken unit" I realized the mechanical lever had popped out of the socket (picture dislocated shoulder) but to diagnose the problem I had already broken the original unit.
