Have you tried any kind of additive in the oil? If the engine is still running, try a can of something like this. Back in the 90's the VW Jettas and Golfs would have stuck/noisy lifters and one can of this solved the issue in 2 miles. I guess you have nothing to lose at this point, give it a shot?
