Here's an update on the status of this deal. Seller told me he was just sending out feelers but didn't really want to fix it. It's like pulling teeth to get this guy to schedule a viewing or getting any real information out of him. After I find out he would take $1,000 for it he emailed me yesterday that he just ordered a DME ECU that has EWS deleted. So basically a clean DME with factory settings and zero mileage and no EWS serial numbers. This after telling me he didn't want to work on it. So much for my plan of a $50 fix. I think I could have gotten by with making a key for it since I have a programmer and Bentley style fobs on the way for my 4.4i. He said if it works after swapping the DME he would sell it to me for $1500, still a great deal if it's as clean as he says, $1000 if it doesn't run. I see no reason why it shouldn't run if the alignment was the original issue do you?
