Is everyone talking about what I think they're talking about-that 1/8" thick aluminum panel under the engine? In the grand scheme of things, it doesn't add much if anything to crash safety, and you could surely drive around without it without even noticing it wasn't there. The only reason why it's even made of metal is in case someone actually tries driving off the beaten path between their home and the nearest shopping mall.
