2005 X5 3.0i's have two fans. The clutched fan driven by the water pump and an electric fan in front of the radiator. The electric fan is there for the AC system. It kicks on when the car is moving slowly and not moving enough air across the AC coil. It is not there to cool the radiator. It would probably work to cool the radiator, but you would have to wire it so it was on all the time.
