It's not a year thing - I think only the N62 (either N62B44 or N62B48) engine E53 came with an electric fan behind the radiator. The rest are all viscous clutch types operated by the main crankshaft pulley and belt, like in my 2005 M57N 3.0d.
And it seems that in all cases, if the main fan (behind the radiator) is electric, (ie. LCI 4.4i and 4.8is) then there is no aux. fan in front.
*edit* I forgot to add - I'm sure you could make it fit but I'm not sure how you could drive it (electrically) as the DME in a 3.0i is not set up for running this fan.
