I’m thinking maybe I need a different gauge from the auto parts store. Am I right that it is between the wheel well and the engine block?

I'm thinking that if you don't know what you are doing to take it in. If you can't get the coupler on, that tells me you don't know what you are doing. If you use a real manifold gauge set you should be able to connect to both the high side port and low side port, but if you try charging the system from the high side, bad thing can happen really fast.

Too many lawyers that would sue someone giving out advice on the internet in which someone hurt themselves because they listen to someone on the internet.

My advice is to take it in to someone who is qualified to work on AC system.
