New doesn't mean proper function. Was the light going off before the new FSU was installed?

There is a list of items powered by the GM any of which could have the same effect of preventing sleep. Usually when FSU you will get a dead battery out of the deal.

I have two "older" x5 (2001s: actually one is a 2000.5) and they both sleep with the shift light off. It's not supposed to stay on. That said clearly (post 12 as evidence) there are some examples of malfunction that allow the light to stay on when the GM shuts down most of the power.

You can do the same test he did and if you are below 50mA after 16 minutes you just have some minor malfunction that is leaving the LED on.
