I guess its all part of the corporate plan to maximize service revenue, and shorten the vehicle ownership experience so you come back and buy another..

Of course, most of the forum members probably are not very representative of the typical owner. To me, it seems that the typical owners are the take it to the dealer for everything kind of person, and they turn their cars over every few years so they have the "latest and greatest"
My in-laws claim to drive their vehicles into the ground and get 'every mile' out of them, but have actually traded every vehicle in they've owned in the last 15-20 years about every 2-3 years on average. They get the itch to upgrade, as you say, and can't help it I guess. They have a sedan and truck at all times, so I've seen it happen nearly a dozen times. It's usually right after they pay it off or get really close to being car payment free again.

I've never seen them drive any of the last several cars/trucks over 100K miles.
They also claim to get awesome deals.
