The 5 speed automatics have an overdrive ratio for 5th gear.
The manual 5 speeds are 1:1 in 5th so no overdrive ratio. The 6 speed manuals have an overdrive ratio for 6th gear.
Later models like my e70 with the 8 speed have a VERY tall overdrive for the final gears. It was quite strange going from nearly 3000 rpms at 70 on the e53 to 1600 rpms in the e70. Its 1100 or 1200 rpm at 55mph in the e70.
