Mobil 1 or Castrol Syntec(this is what I use) 0w40 is the correct commonly available oil to use. I get it from amazon when it is on sale in 5quart containers for $24 or so.
Most BMWs take 7-8 quarts. My 335i took about 7, I am just about to do my x5 4.8i but haven't yet.

BMW 5W-30 is no different than any other LL-01 oil. It can do extended drain intervals. That’s the whole idea behind LL-01 approval, it takes the guess work out of finding the right oil and guarantees quality/specs.
The 4.8 takes 9 quarts. FWIW, Mobil 1 0W-40 is no longer approved, but probably still fine.
