Ok so I did the pano sunshades. No pics this time. The project was sort of epic as I decided to also replace the pano seal with the updated version, I’ve had it for 2 years now.
Today was a 7 hour day. No joke. Doing suede on our headliners is serious business.
First things first get a battery tender lol. I had to move the panels and shade so many times, forgot to turn off ignition for hours on end, that the Beast barely started at the end of today. Or just don’t forget to turn off ignition. Up to you.
Remove glass. Front is straight forward. 3 t25 screws per side under the accordion thingie. Accordion thingie pulls away on the bottom. Pick up glass place in the trunk. Rear glass is sort of a pain in the ass. You need to tilt it, unscrew, slide it toward rear of car, there you have enough space to pivot glass and clear the front screw tabs. Put glass on top of beer fridge. Now close shade and pop it up to vent mode. Unscrew the 3 t15 shade screws per side in front, 2 per side in rear. Front and rear shade screws are different. Now slide shade back, pull front share forward. Repeat as necessary. Rear is opposite, don’t lose the spring looking shits on drivers side. Note how they go in.
Now is also a good time to pull of pano seal. Get ready for the pain. You get to enjoy sdanding in the rear seat floor area, while your head is in the front glass area, hunched over cause your damn garage door opener keeps hitting you in the head. The seal was dead. I am not kidding, I probably should have replaced it a long time ago. Dried up, my x is garage kept and that shit was like brittle plastic. All 4 corners of the seal had no sign of glue or anything rubbery. This is good, because the rest of the area you get to rub it off with your thumbs, millimeter at a time. As you would do with a 3 month old sticker you trying to remove from your fridge because your kids wanted to add rainbow dash to the freezer. Brake cleaner was best in giving me the assist with removing old seal glue shit. Damn this part was painful. I almost regretted it. But once I went for a ride, the noise is soooooo much less, it was worth it. Put on new seal takes literally 5 min. It’s a sticker. So yea. Stick it on, cut to size. Done.
So to repeat, if doing this project get headliner glue remover spray. I was like who cares at this point, only two little panels to do. I don’t need no stinking glue remover spray. Boy was I wrong. Oh and remember that time I glued my shade liner back on without removing it from car? Yea that was stupid. I used 3m yellow that time too. And holy shit, is that stuff good. Huge difference in pain in the ass between “repaired” panel and the factory one. As far as scraping off the shit. Anyway, this took a long time. Pretty sure weed, beer and profanity is what gets you through this misery. This glue up was easy as cake in comparison to the main part of headliner. So sexy with fresh suede.
Return stuff back into car in reverse order. Fairly quick process. Sunroof panel screws are all slotted. So keep em lose. Put all screws in and close the glass. Get out, stand on running boards and push glass in or out as necessary to line it up with roof. Don’t have running boards? Well then maybe you should get some, cause you will be on them all fookin day for this part. Tighten it all up. Now you have to re-initialize the pano roof. The seal comes with a paper telling you to follow coding procedure some number. Who cares, we all know that you just have to hold pano button up into vent position for what feels like 3 damn hours when you are exhausted. It’s like 2 min thing really, but feels like 3 hours. Done. I’ll throw up finished product tomorrow.
All in, this is a very long job. I can see a shop wanting $1500 for this process. Only way to save time here is to get headliner glue remover spray, spandex material, only use 3m yellow, lots of blades, lots of painters tape and plastic. You need painters tape and some sort of plastic to put down on your work area, and area you don’t want to glue. There is surprising aamount of stuff you cannot get the glue onto with these sunshades, on the top side at least.
