This would be a good example of how useful DIS v57 can be. It sounds like you are reading OBD codes? Any BMW specific tool would probably give you a better description of the code and DIS would probably even give you a wiring diagram of the related circuit and a diagnostic and repair strategy. If I had to only the information you have given to work from though I would suspect a clock spring problem.
