Not my intention to give fellow x5 owners more to think about wpoll, IF it ain't broke don't fix is my logic...but in my case and like i said i'll know after another week/ max two of my usual low mileage driving whether or not the new starter is indeed less of a drain on the battery than the old one. The denso oem 7788680 looking it up is a 2.0kw rated motor. 11 teeth...the replacement casco (made in china eu? ....nobody would tell me even though rep for eastern Europe got back to me told me suppliers range from china eu turkey etc etc )and for that matter refurbished 'identical' densos are 2.2kw also....

I wouldn't worry if you aren't getting battery issues....remember i approached a x5 3.0d facelift owner in a parking lot....hers did start much better than my lazy starter but not the same rapid start as the 2.2kw i have installed now....on a side note again if you recall my old starter on a handful of the repeated cranking attempts (where it looked liked no start was on the cards) , it sprung to life and startup was very rapid so I knew potential was there for better days faster starting.

Ok ease of access, would have recorded it all but I know what its like to have someone hanging over you whilst you are working,so I didn't do this. I don't like it either, but the auto electrician removed the plastic engine cover...the cabin filter.....rubber trim running along width of engine bay closest to this....then the housing the cabin filter sits in (big heavy box)..and loosened the dipstick tube and took off the middle underbelly trim....i think he had a go at removing the sump guard too but couldn't....that would have given more access...all in all max 1.5 hours and starter out....he was good but next time i am going to my usual mechanic...only reason I went to this fella was because he was convinced he could revive old starter same day...but this couldn't happen in a day as he managed to snap the bolts in the housing of the old starter whilst taking it apart, then I pressured him for car...on leaving he is still convinced he can recon my old one to start just as well as new one. IF you gotta competent mechanic go for it, below is ebay link of a re-manufactured in Germany denso i was going order....unless a new one is more appealing to you? maybe more cost effective to go for one nearer your timezone, shipping maybe a tad hi to you

This new replacement starter was manufactured in Germany and has warranty
