I removed the right axle without even touching the brakes or the axle nut. So there was no need for this tool as things played out for me. There's even, as i remember, some doubt about whether this tool would fit on our CV joints.
OP - Good to see you are familiar with the various horror stories regarding CV joint/boot work. But it can go easily too. And what ends up being difficult on one car / person / set of available tools may end up being no problem for the next guy ...
So be ready to adapt your plan and hope for the best.
