I would recommend getting the trans thermostat back in there, it helps heat the transmission when cold and keeps it cool when hot. An excellent pic. Thank you. Now it is becoming clear in my mind how these parts are supposed to fit together. I think mine may have had a broken tstat in the lower bracket and that was impeding the fitting of the tank. I won't be able to touch it until this weekend though.
