Spoke with my indi today re your issues. He says he would start with the vanos solenoids as they affect the timing when engine is idling or cold start. There are 4 of them and the small holes get clogged up.

It's a DIY to pull them out and clean them.

Then he would look at cam position sensors before spending any money or looking into levers.
