Twisting and pulling wasn’t working for me. I was at the point where I was going to break something, so I tried the not to hard smack to get the latch back to the closed position. It went. After that it opened almost normally, but I could see the inner latch piece moving. For once it wasn’t an expensive fix. Very happy about that.

Now for my left rear door carrier installation. :-(
