If the E70 you are looking at has the M57TU2 engine, they are very reliable. They have a few minor week points but nothing like valve stem seals or timing chains etc. - just glow plugs, engine breather (like a CCV) and of course a couple of turbos that need decent oil at all times.
But I doubt there are any M57-based diesels in the USA - I'm pretty sure BMW moved up to the N57 series for the USA-release.
Don't know a lot about the later N57 diesel engine except that its very similar to the M57 - the changes are focussed on emission reduction and output power increases (225kW and 600N.m).
The N57s smaller sister, the N47, HAS seen a LOT of timing chain failures...
I don't think this has been an issue with the larger N57 engines - it has been suggested that the lower gearing on the cams results in less stress on the chain.
Good fun engines, these big turbo I6 diesels - so much torque!!
