You can't turn the key to zero with gear not in park. That's part of the mechanism that makes you put the brake on to pull out of park as well. What I don't know if the switch at the gear shift is part of the start interlock or just the one in the transmission.

I would look at the transmission connector either way. Mine was full of rusty water and wreaking havoc with the PRNDL display on the dash. I was lucky that "P" still was working so it always started, but that didn't help me because when the car thought I had 54th gear selected it made for very unfriendly shifts.
