I have many times let the door shut and I have to reach inside to use the inside handle.

You can open the hatch from inside and you can also apply 12v at the B+ under the hood to operate the tailgate.

For future reference (to all readers): when you disconnect the battery, push the latch shut with a screwdriver etc to make it impossible to close the hatch. You won't be able to unlatch until you reconnect the battery. You can put a sheet of rubber or foam over the latch to avoid the nearly inevitable slamming the hatch into a closed latch.
Another way that I choose to block the tailgate from slamming latched on me when the battery is disconnected is to place a towel over the tailgate latch.
