I think you should go for it! It's what I would do in your shoes. I had SAS issues with my wife's e83 when we bought it used. At the time, FCPEuro had OE steering sensors (BMW logo filed off) for closer to $200 IIRC. At over $300 now for a genuine sensor, I'd take the chance on the repair kit. There aren't a lot of parts inside the sensor to go bad.

Also, if you change your mind and get a new sensor, keep in mind it must be "coded" to your particular vehicle. I was able to code mine using Progman.
