Just not clear where this oil came from. Maybe it was just oil filter spillage remnants from a previous oil change, but that is awfully far away from the filter housing, and on both sides of the EGR?

Guess I need to get some time to clean it up really well around the area, and see if it returns. That wouldn't be from an OFHG leak, too high and forward, right?
I have a 335d and X5d both completely deleted and tuned. The 335d got a downpipe with an aftermarket DOC and the x5 I simply gutted the DPF and left the factory DOC intact. The difference in exhaust smell between the two cars is surprising. Even with the aftermarket DOC the 335d has the distinct diesel odor. The X5 exhaust smells more like a modern diesel with everything still intact. Neither car smokes under normal driving.

Yeah, I would just clean that area and monitor. That oil could have come from a small spill when changing the oil filter and then it was blown all over by the fan. The CAC pipe typically leaks before the FMIC on the 335d so I would look for a mess there also.
