That gave me room to get it past from the driver wheel well with a long extension and swivel. I used a bit of tape around the key to keep the key in the socket. So we both essentially had the same idea to get it done.

My x5 has adaptive steering, there is a pressure line that runs in front of the fill bolt leaving very little clearance.
