I do have an 04 and it is the original tranny.
Dunno what to tell u.
Had a metal pan, changed it to a plastic one. Filled it from the side.
Everything works great. Done it a few times.

The metal pan is def deeper, and I can see how filling it that way works too, but that shit doesn't work with the plastic pan, and I've yet to see a 4.8iS without a side fill plug, I looked at several transmission when I thought mine was shot. Ended up rebuilding the valve body and everything is perfect.
