The thermostat opens and closes based on coolant temp. It opens and closes even in extreme weather temps. Were you in DFW area when this happened?

Yes BC, each time. They were the "ice" days over the past couple years where in typical Dallas tradition, everyone with a car leaves their office at the same time when anyone sees a snowflake. So my 31 mile commute takes three hours of idle speed driving to get home - worst kind of drive for an engine and our CCV system.
