Tightened "fairly tight" is probably too tight...

This is the biggest issue I see when folks change the oil on these types of filter housings. They crank it down, then crack the housing, or deform it slightly...

If it was tight enough to be "fairly tight", I'd 1st try tightening it to just snug (like it's supposed to be). The seal is what is supposed to provide the seal. Tightening down the filter housing tight does not make the seal, seal better... There's absolutely zero reason to tighten the filter housing down to more than just snug.
