I missed the query about the BST. You can determine if it’s bst by measuring voltage from B+ to ground under the hood before and after the tug.

If you have no voltage at B+ before tug and after you have voltage it’s the BST.

BST could only act like this if not activated by an accident. The BST when blown has barbs that prevent the contact from closing.
