The IHKA module is located in the dashboard behind the heater controls. You should not need to replace it for the retrofit.

I didn’t replace the entire steering column when I did my retrofit, but it seems to me that it would be a lot more work to do that. For me, the most time consuming part of the process was running the wires to the fuse box, the climate control panel (instead of just grounding the control wire), and the ground wire. The rest of the process went quickly after getting all three wires to the steering column. You’ll need to do that anyway, regardless of whether you replace the entire steering column.

My recommendation would be to disassemble the salvage yard steering column and just use the parts you’ll need. You should be able to use your original airbag in the new steering wheel.
