I agree with Ard that the battery is unlikely to be the cause of the issue, but with electrical system diagnosis on a BMW, I like to start with a known good battery. And not knowing how old the one in the vehicle is now, 2+ years at least, I would replace it. 14.9v on the dash is on the high side. Your voltage regulator on the alternator could be shot but we don't know anything for sure yet.

I'd definitely get a BMW code reader as well so you can see exactly what the X5 is reporting as a problem.
