crystalworks is on a distinguished road
I also own an e61 and am fairly tall (6'8"). About the same age with 2 offspring as well. Definitely more of a challenge to get into the e61 than the wife's e70 or my e53. But the e61 has more second row space than either of the x5's. Maybe a couple inches more leg room?

On your concerns. Fuel economy for our x35d is 22 City and 25-27 highway depending on speeds/road conditions. Tire wear on our 20's has been fine. We put the current set of Continental DWS' on the truck about 20000 miles ago and they are still very serviceable (70% tread life left). On 19's we used to get 27-30mpg highway.
