It looks like my current key is already a copy, as it definitely has a removable / loose transponder chip (the little black plastic one) and there are no BMW logo's on the key.

Hopefully, can just take the chip from that, drop it in the new key and everything will just work. If not, as you say I can get the remote locking working and just use my current key to start and drive.
