BMW spec'd in L. A quick look up showed 8L is the spec for the 4.8 which is almost exactly 8.5Q, you are saying you need a full add'l Q to get to the center; that does seem amazing, i would like to see other people's answer.
Makes you wonder; is the correct amount the actual quarts/liters put in or the line on the dip stick. any chance not the original dip stick and yours is too short ?
