I know that to the uninformed public they interchange them at if synonymous. They are not. It’s like calling an X5 “the BMW “ and expecting all people to just know that they mean x5.
Model = sars-cov-2
Make= coronavirus
Ill informed people is a significant thorn in my side.
here is another car based analogy:
A screw is a bad thing that can kill a tire. A hole is the problem the tire has.
Calling the screw and the hole the same thing is exactly what calling the virus covid-19 is.
It’s horribly imprecise and inaccurate.
I don’t care what name is used but don’t use the same wrong one for everything. Yes it is important especially because there is a tremendous amount of inaccurate data in the USA tracking of cv-19, throwing out considerable confusion to everybody seems to be CDCs primary goal this time around (was not the case with sars-cov-1 (in 2003 they of course didn’t have the 1)
The more fuzzy the truth the less accurate people are informed the more people will just act like lemmings and stop thinking. So yes, it’s important.
Here is a fantastic example of cherry picked data and I blame primarily the CDC.
That chart is the daily death rate from cv-19 in 42 countries. There is no possible way that honest data will produce only ONE country who’s tail end of an epidemic does not follow *every virus ever*.
It’s basically and “open and shut case” that somebody for some reason wants to extend how long the epidemic (using the word vs pandemic to include only USA) lasts.
Now, it is slightly possible that the stay at home and social distancing and the masks actually are harmful as the CDC said back in January. I know for certain wearing the mask is detrimental to my health and immune system. It might reduce the chance I catch the thing by 1/3 but greatly increases the odds I get more sick if the germ still gets me.
We need to drop the masks as soon as possible. 100s of millions of people are depressing their immune systems with the masks and stay at home.
It’s very simple common sense and logic: everybody knows that the foundation of a healthy body and healthy immune system is activity!
Most people know that small exposure to germs is how we exercise our immune system. I highly doubt the current theory of asymptotic cv-19 is accurate (went through a course of sickness and just didn’t realize it). What is ∞ more likely is that they were exposed to it but because their body has been in the sun has plenty of vitamin D, oops “vitamin D” (hope somebody gets that), young enough to have a high zinc level in their blood, they body says FU CV and took it out.
This is virus 101. Many many more people are exposed to the flu virus and “magically” don’t get sick.
There are cv-19 studies going on right now that will show some concepts similar to this be true.
I really hope “they” don’t find a vaccine but solid effective treatment unless it’s like polio where the vaccine tricks the body to build antibodies and blocks the virus from taking root.
You (the reader) and every single (and I suppose married) person on earth hopes I am correct in predicting that this sars virus will burg itself out like the last one.
sars “the prequel “ didn’t kick us in the nuts hard enough to be taken seriously and hopefully “they” will learn enough from “sars the sequel” that we can get on top of sars “Armageddon “ boxed set. Prophecy indicates cv19 is a drop of water to an ocean of what will eventually happen. and It’s not CDC that predicted it.
All signs are and have been pointing to me being correct since feb or March that “how it happens in the countries that for it first” expect similar here.
USA other than the people on average being a shit ton more arrogant than most of the world (a couple European nations give us a run for our money), are no different; race is a made up notion they are not significantly different from a generic makeup and will almost certainly be very similar in the end run of how the virus waxes and wanes.
I said In January and holds true today. Covid 19 as a phenomenon is *mostky hyoe* yes you heard me correctly.
Yes it’s real, yes it’s tragic, no it could not be avoided and if anybody tells you a NET single human life was saved by masks or house arrest they pulled that concept out of there ass, there is ZERO facts to back that up. (Just as there are zero facts to back up the opposite argument).
I would have taken the not spend $6T on not much more than a guess as to which route to take.
China was already getting cv very much under control as an example of hitting peak and recovering before we over reacted and killed the worlds economy and 1/4 of everybody’s jobs.
The silver lining is this:
Cv will not kill the American spirit even as it kills 30x as many as 911, we need our asses kicked every couple of decades to put us in our place.

“I could use a good ass kicking”
Back to silver lining:
As bad as cv is, not only will we survive we will be much stronger because of it.
A lot of mission critical products that we exclusively get from a single source we can’t trust will be diversified so when sars-cv-3 comes to kick our ass we won’t be caught bent over with a sign over our “permanent smile” saying “insert here”.
In addition China will not recover as quickly as the USA in large part do to the fact that they have the most to lose since they have the majority of the companies that will split up to other countries.
China was set to overtake USA GDP within the next five years. That may have just been punted 15-20 years down the road because the USA will recovers more quickly than China absolutely.
Back to @bc: consider how meticulous you are with your car maintenance: how much smoother do things operate because you know what a ft·lb is and the importance of having the right fluid in the right place and proper procedure for doing maintenance.
Considering that literally life is a stake not just a motor I’m surprised you think it’s only important that scientists care about the importance of using descriptive terms when discussing probably the most important topic in our lifetime.
Back to the “who said it first” until WHI got their marching orders from China to come up with a non Wuhan name CHINA’s state run media used numerous variations such as “Wuhan pneumonia” and “Wuhan viral pneumonia epidemic” (Jan 9 )
It wasn’t into the end of January and after China had literally trained the rest of the world to use those terms (and they all did), did China finally realize “oops that might make us look bad” and the CCP did what they do best sell the world their cheap BS.
Jan 29 some Chinese media started to report that including Wuhan was racist (same outlet of course that had been doing it for 4 weeks).
In mid February, opinion columns in China asked for western outlets to stop using the phrases Chinese virus and Wuhan virus.
Funny that 6 feb condemned western media for using the term Wuhan virus but on 17 February published a story saying “Chinese netizens fear japan would repeat Wuhan virus mistake at early stage”.
It was WHO that came up with the names of the virus and the disease.
They quickly also told people to not refer to the virus by name so now we know. What idiots. Name the virus then say but don’t use the name just infer it. That’s asinine.
On China’s marching orders AP guidelines say drop any mention of origin of the virus. Well since 6B people know the origin, no possible way to look more guilty than run from a crime. They threw atomized gas in the fire! They brought on the stigma themselves by trying to bury it. If they just were honest the simmer of annoyance would not have turned into a rolling boil of hate.
There may definitely be a genetic link to resistance.
China was very minimally hit by cv19.
As horrifying as it was to witness they stamped that shit out hard but they are a true police state nation and put 100+ million on real house arrest for 70 or so days.
In the USA we thought that’s our cushy sorta quarantine would be “just as good “ ask the 66% of cv hospitalizations coming from self quarantine in nyc how’s that working out for you?
