I used to have an E23 sedan (1983 735i 5sp), the hood struts failed all the time.
So I came up with this idea using 3/4" copper pipe + a screw ---> bullet-proof.
No need to carry a broomstick.

Here is the recipe:
- Raise the hood all the way up and support with a stick.
- Measure length of copper pipe (used in plumbing) needed. Cost is about $5 at Home Depot etc.
- Cut copper pipe to length.
- Undo the rod end of the strut (remove circlip) and slide the pipe over.
- Crimp one end of the copper pipe that is near the rod end.
- Re-install the strut rod end and circlip.

- To use, it is very very simple: lift the hood up, slide the copper pipe over: this way the strut body rests on the copper pipe. Insert the screw so the copper pipe CANNOT slide back ---> this is bomb-proof.
- Once done, simply store the screw on one of these holes in the fender.

This copper pipe trick lasted 10 yrs before I sold the E23...Please see photo...
