I buy them used. 70% tread 70% discount. (between $350 and $450 a set). In five years bought only one replacement set and two additional tires between both cars.
I regularly leave sports sedans in the dust on 270 off ramps. Clearly they *could* keep up with me but past the driver's comfort level. Rated 25 I come in at 45-50 and maintain 35-40.
The best way to describe the extra grip was the first time I drove a friend's x5 I went to show him the method I use to maximize speed on 270s I drifted the entire time going at least 5 mph slower than usual. I know that some summer tread are better for hot dry but add six days of no rain in Chicago and my tires are much better. Or; rain plus leaf = ice levels of traction. Like I said I've gotten used to the better traction and no way I can go back.
