Update: It's fixed! Ultimately the crankshaft position sensor was not seated correctly. It was slightly askew and it changed the angle of the sensor enough to cause the no start condition.
Thanks to Ard and others for commenting. I think Ard gets a donut for questioning the seating of the sensor being correct early on.
I'm including two photos, one showing the incorrect installation and the second showing the final reinstall that allowed for normal starting. Hopefully this helps someone when you come face to face with this sensor install.
