If you have one, plug in your OBDII scanner and pull codes for yourself, if you don’t have one, snag a “cheap” one from local auto parts store and pull codes. If CPS, I believe those can be unplugged which will let the truck default to a base map and should still start. There is one on each valve cover, right against the firewall, easy to see and reach.
My guess, there’s more going on there than he’s letting on. In regard to timing chain, check the condition of the oil and pop the oil cap and you can look directly down onto the chain and cam gear on that side, may even be able to poke in there with a finger and feel what you can feel. I’m guessing, never done it myself, but if the chain or guides were physically broken there may be some play in the chain or some minor movement of the gear. Heck, be easy with it, but you could slide a stick a flathead screw driver in there and give it a push. Could also watch the gear and chain and turn the motor over by hand using the crank bolt with a big socket and breaker bar, shouldn’t be any slack.
